Peregrinaciones al Monte Fuji en el Año Kōshin

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Yoshifuji
1860

Mt. Fuji is believed to have appeared in the year of Kōshin and it was said that climbing it in this year would bring the same benefits as climbing 33 times. The year Manen 1 (1860), when this work was painted, was a Kōshin year, a special Goen-doshi (auspicious year), and restrictions on women's entry were also relaxed. Consequently, women are depicted among the crowd in the painting. The scene of many Fujikō believers making their pilgrimage conveys the flourishing state of Fuji-mode (Mt. Fuji pilgrimage) at the time.
