Bird’s eye View of the Whole Area Affected by the Kanto Earthquake

解説かいせつ

Yoshida Hatsusaburou 1923 On September 1, 1923, a huge earthquake whose epicenter was in the western part of Sagami Bay struck the whole of the Kanto region. This bird’s eye view painting shows fires breaking out and spreading in Tokyo, Yokohama, and various other places along the Pacific coast. It was distributed as an insert in an issue of the Osaka edition of Asahi Shimbun newspaper published in the year after the earthquake. The company’s flag design can be seen on the wings of the aircraft flying above. On the rear is a heading translating “one year after the disaster,” accompanied by a description of the destruction and recovery situation by means of photos and articles.
