The Sugoroku Board Game of the Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway

解説かいせつ

This work is a sugoroku board game depicting the Toukaidou Highway in spaces shaped like Japanese fans. The word Suehiro in the title refers to a Japanese fan. The starting point of this sugoroku is Nihonbashi, located in the lower right corner and the goal is Kyoto, located in the center. In each space a procession of people are depicted and in the space for Kyoto, a man wearing a sokutai, a traditional Japanese formalwear for the members of the imperial court, is depicted giving a document to a man. These depictions hint that the subject of this sugoroku was the great procession of 14th shogun Tokugawa Iemochi to Kyoto that took place in 1863.
