Fifty-three Stations: Plum Flower Comparison

解説かいせつ

Gosoutei hirosada production year unknown This is a Dochu Sugoroku based on the route of the Toukaidou Highway. Each square is based on the series Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway (Houeidou), a set of ukiyo-e woodblock prints created by Hiroshige Utagawa around 1832-33. The illustration in each square is a simplified version omitting people, etc., and there are some differences from the original illustration it is based on. However, the original essence of the ukiyo-e have been captured and incorporated into the squeres. Only the final square, the goal, is in Osaka, not in Kyoto. The illustration in this square is not based on the Hoeido edition, but depicts Ebisu. Ebisu is sipping sake in front of a sea bream served whole, and appears to be relaxed.
