Utagawa Kunisada(Utagawa Toyokuni Ⅲ) 1833 The background landscape is the same composition of “Maisaka, Scene of Imagire” from Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition of the Toukaidou series. Maisaka post station was located at the eastern shores of Lake Hamana located at south. In order to get to Lake Hamana from this post station, people had to travel with a ferryboat at Imagire. The scenery of the east side of Lake Hamana, near the Maisaka Ferry is depicted. The Piles depicted in the foreground are considered as wave breakers.

Utagawa Kunisada(Utagawa Toyokuni Ⅲ) 1833 The background landscape is the same composition of “Nissaka, Sayo Mountain Pass” from Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition of the Toukaidou series.This Nakayama mountain pass was also famous with the “yonaki-ishi (a stone that weeps at night)”. According to a legend, a mother’s soul who died at this place leaving her baby alone transferred into this stone and weeps every night. The yonaki-ishi is located in the middle of the road, and few travelers stop by at the stone.

Tempou 7) Fujieda from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway At Fujieda, the scene of reassigning the baggage to the next porters is illustrated. At the Toukaidou Highway, porters and horses are basically changed at every post station. The building illustrated at right is the warehouse and the changing procedure is taking place in this building. A young lady wearing a kimono and ornamental hairpin of the cherry-blossom pattern is seems like from a rich family, This series of beauties with the landscapes of the Toukaidou Highway on the background was produced by Utagawa Kunisada and it consists of 56 works. This series illustrated the scenes from the Nihonbashi Bridge to Narumi post station and Yokkaichi post station on its background. The distinctive about this series is all the works were basically referred the representative work of Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Fifty-three Stations of Toukaidou Highway” series of Hoeidou edition while adding few changes. Although this series is known with more familiar title of “Kunisada’s Toukaidou with Beauties”, our museum adopted the title written on the cover “Beauties with the Views of Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou”.
