Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige II (Shigenobu) 1859 (Ansei 6), Publisher: Uo-ei This One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Various Provinces series had been published during 1859 to 1861 (Ansei 6 to Bunkyuu 1) and this spectacular series produced nearly hundred pieces, became Utagawa Hiroshige II’s representative work. Within this One Hundred Views series, “Noge of Yokohama of Musashi Province” is from the Musashi and Sagami (※) region. ※Musashi province (present day’s Tokyo and Saitama prefecture and a part of Kanagawa prefecture) and the Sagami province (Today’s Kanagawa prefecture, except the north eastern region of the prefecture) are often grouped as a set. Utagawa Hiroshige II (Shigenobu) Bunsei 9~Meiji 2 (1826~1869) Hiroshige II was a pupil of Hiroshige I, and he first used the artist name Shigenobu. Later, upon Hiroshige I’s death, he got married with teacher’s daughter , became the member of Ando family, succeeded teacher’s name: He worked under the name Hiroshige II around the period. However in Keio 1, he left the family, then became the member of Morita family, and used the artist name of Shosai Rissho. He was active as an ukiyo-e artist from the Koka era (1844~1848) till Meiji 1~2 (1868~1869). He followed the picture style of Hiroshige I, and produced Yokohama-e (ukiyo-e depicting foreigner’s life style and the scenes of Yokohama) and kaika-e (pictures depicting the westernized things and cultures of the new era).
