There are several two-story teahouses at the Kanagawa’s Dai-machi’s slope, and it is said, visitors can enjoy the spectacular view from these teahouses.

The background landscape of this picture is based on the Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition of the Toukaidou series “Fujisawa, Yugyouji Temple”. The Toriido Bridge illustrated at the back of a woman is Daigiri Bridge (Today’s Yugyouji Bridge) and the First Torii Gate of Enoshima Shrine, which used to stand at this place is illustrated by the bridge. In Hiroshige’s work, group of pilgrims heading to Mt. Oyama carry a large wood sword and an omiki-waku (container that carries water or liquor from Mt. Oyama), are illustrated on the bridge, but in Kunisada’s picture they moves to the front of the Torii Gate. The lady illustrated in front fastens obi belt as she departs for a journey and travel kits such as cigarette case, a luggage wrapped by a close and a sedge-woven hat are illustrated by the foot.


“Beauties with Landscapes of the Toukaidou Highway”
Known with the more familiar title of “Toukaidou with Beauties”, this series illustrates the beauties with the customs of the related regions at the foreground and the sceneries of fifty-three stations of the Toukaidou on the background. This series has a special feature that the background sceneries are based on the “Hoeidou Edition of the Toukaidou Highway” series produced by Utagawa Hiroshige. Although the sceneries illustrated from Miya post station to Kyoto (Although Yokkaichi post station is the only exception) are produced based on Kunisada’s original designs.

Ochikochi Dōin・Hishikawa Moronobu

This is a modified edition of Ochikochi Dōin’s Illustrated Map of the Tōkaidō Highway (1690). This edition was published in 1841 by Sōyō. The map’s legend states, “…the old edition of the map used a 3 bu to 1 chō scale, whereas this map uses a 1 bu to 1 chō scale…” meaning the original edition showed 1 chō of distance (approximately 109 meters) as approximately 9 millimeters, whereas this later edition showed 1 chō as approximately 3 millimeters. The original 1690 edition was subsequently re-released in a more compact form, and this 1841 edition features famous locations in the vicinity that were not included in the original, as well as detailed information about tea houses along the route.
The 1841 edition was included in Tōkaidō Bungen Ezu (Illustrated Map of the Tōkaidō Highway in Sections), which was published by Kichimonjiya Ichibē of Ōsaka, and also published by Takehara Yoshibē of Kyōto. Many publishers were involved in reprinting and reproducing the map.

This series of ukiyo-e is called “The Toukaidou with Kyouka Poems” since a kyouka poem is assorted to every ukiyo-e picture. The Daigiri Biridge (present day Yugyouji Bridge) and the First Torii Gate of Enoshima Island seeing from Yugyouji Temple are illustrated, which is the opposite composition of Houeidou version. The mountain on the background is the Mt. Oyama. The containers a figure on the bridge is carrying are omiki-waku, the containers carrying water and sake from Mt. Oyama, and symbolizing the pilgrimage to Mt. Oyama. A custom of post station such as the kousatsuba, a place to stand the signboards at the end of bridge is also illustrated.

Hiroshige was a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro. He also studied varieties of painting styles from Kano school, nan-ga (southern Chinese painting style), and Shijō school. He was active as an ukiyo-e artist from Bunsei 1 to his death (1818~1858). He first produced pictures of beautiful women, Kabuki actors and worriers, but from the Tempō era he was acknowledged as a leading landscape artist. He published many pictures of famous places such as the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido”. Hiroshige’s the other fortes were kachoga (picture of birds and flowers) and animal pictures.

This series is called Gyousho script version of the Toukaidou according to the script style of the title. The first Torii Gate to Enoshima is illustrated at the right and the Daigiri Bridge (present day Yugyouji Bridge) is illustrated on the left. After crossing the Daigiri Bridge, this Torii gate indicates the entrance to the Enoshima Island line from the Toukaidou Highway. A person on the bridge is carrying omiki-waku, containers for water and sake from Mt. Oyama, thus indicating these travelers are way back from Mt. Oyama.

Hiroshige’s koban size Toukaidou series was rare. In this Horizontal print version, Hiroshige sprinkled his bright compositional ideas. The audience would recognize people walking in a line on a bridge are the pilgrims who had paid homage to Mt. Oyama, since one of them is carrying the omiki-waku (the liquor or water containers). People used omiki-waku to bring liquor or water from Mt. O-yama. The group of people using sticks and walk under the Torii gate are the pilgrims heading to Enoshima Island. The building complex appears among the mountain at the background is Yugyouji Temple.

At the reisho script series, the night scene of Fujisawa post station is illustrated. The Torii gate illustrated at the right is the entrance of the Enoshima “The First Torii gate”. The bridge illustrated in the middle is Daigiri Bridge (Today’s Yugyouji Bridge). Various kind of people, such as the travelers arriving at the post station and woman touting customers are illustrated.
At the vertical picture series, the pine trees of Nango and Mt. Fuji are illustrated. This place was famous for its scenic point of “Hidari-Fuji”, or the Mt. Fuji appears from the left. “Hidari-Fuji” along the Toukaidou Highway is very rare since this can be seen only from Nango and Yoshiwara post station.

This series is called Reisho script version of the Toukaidou according to the script style of the title, and recognized as the one of the three premier series of the Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway with Houeidou version and Gyousho script version. In the picture the view of the twilight time of Fujisawa Post Station is illustrated. The Torii gate on the right is the First Torii Gate, which is the entrance of Enoshima Island, and the bridge on the left is the Daigiri Bridge (present day Yugyouji Bridge). The enliven mood of the station with the employees of motels trying to catch travelers just arrived at the station is illustrated.

This work is one of the pictures inserted in a orihon or a folded book, ”Picture Book of Famous Places of Toukaidou” (Pictures by Hiroshige, published in 1841, 23 pictures in total). The gate of Yugyouji Temple in a beautiful snowy landscape, the approach steps to the temple, which are steeper than the present day, and the solemn Niou, or two guardians’ gate at the end of the approach are illustrated with Hiroshige’s exquisite composition. This gate also appears in the picture map of Yugyouji Temple, but burnt down by the big fire of the Fujisawa Post Station in 1880 (Meiji 13).
