Utagawa Hiroshige 1840 The scenery with the people crossing a bridge that spanned over the Yui River, locate at the west side of Yui post station is depicted. People crossed over the Yui River by by kachi-watashi (Men porters who carried travelers to cross them over the river by walk.) during summer time. During winter, people used a temporal bridge that spans over the Yui Rirver. The Serpentine river that extends to the left emphasizes the depth of the picture.

Since Oi River was a wide river and its stream was unstable, it was difficult to build a bridge over it or to run ferryboat service. People crossed the river by walk, and since it was the only way to cross Oi river, this river was considered the most difficult river to cross along the Toukaidou Highway. This series of ukiyo-e is called “The Toukaidou with Kyouka Poems” since a kyouka poem is assorted to every ukiyo-e picture.
