Subtitle: Morokoshi Field at Koyurugi Cape Utagawa ToyokuniⅡ 1830-34 This print depicts the view of Enoshima Island and Mt. Fuji from Morokoshi field, which was said to have been located west of Koshigoe. Koyurugi Cape is depicted protruding in to the frame from the left. Travelers are also depicted walking on the beach. Utagawa Toyokuni II only produced two works depicting Enoshima Island. The works being this print and the bijin-ga (paintings of beauties), No.27 Kashiku of Tsuru-ya House with the View of Enoshima Island, from the series “Collection of Beauties with Famous Places of Japan”.

Subtitle: View of Nojima Island Seen from Seto Bridge Utagawa ToyokuniⅡ 1830-34 The scene of sails returning to the port at dusk is illustrated. The bridge depicted in the lower portion of the print is Seto Bridge, a unique bridge made up of two small bridges that are connected by an island in the middle. The building depicted in the lower right is likely the inn Azuma-ya, in which a banquet appears to be taking place.

Utagawa ToyokuniⅡ 1830-34 As the subtitle suggests, the view of the mountains of Bōsō Peninsula (located in present day Chiba Prefecture) is depicted across the sealine from Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine in the foreground.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1865 A mountainous village is illustrated. The leaves have turned to fall colors and a serene autumn landscape is created. The mountain is printed in a rich yellow, further evoking an autumnal mountain scene.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1865 Two travelers are passing along a beach lined with pine trees. The winds appear to be incredibly strong as the travelers hold on to their sukegasa (travel hats that doubled as protection against the sun and rain), while the large waves can be seen crashing into the shoreline. The subtitle, Zazanza-matsu, comes from the folklore surrounding a poem read by Ashikaga Yoshinori, the sixth shōgun of the Muromachi shogunate. According to this legend, Yoshinori held a party under these same pine trees and upon hearing the sound of the pine needles rustling in the wind, spoke the following poem: “The Sound of Hamamatsu, Zazanza”

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1865 This work shows a view of Yoshida Castle, in the front right, with Toyokawa bridge over Toyokawa River in the background. Workers on the scaffolding are repairing Yoshida Castle, while a few of them take a moment to admire the scenery. The composition is mimicking Hiroshige I’s Yoshida from his Hōeidō Edition of the “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō” series.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1865 Snow piles up on the travelers on horseback crossing a bridge and their surroundings. They resemble the travelers on horseback and the horse drivers depicted in the print from the same series, Hara. The view of the Futasegawa Bridge over the Futase River on the outskirts of Kakegawa station is illustrated, with the gate of the Akiha Shrine in the background. Once the bridge is crossed, the road branches off to the Akiha Road.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1865 Hara post station is the closest station along the Tōkaidō to Mt. Fuji. This is reflected in the print’s composition with Mt. Fuji expansively taking up the background with magnificence. A wetland of this region called Fujino-numa spreads between the Tōkaidō highway and Mt. Fuji. Fujino-numa is also called Ukishima-numa (directly translated to “floating island swamp”) or Ukishimaga-hara (“floating island glade”). The composition imitates that of the print, “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō: Hara” by Hiroshige I.
