Utagawa Hiroshige The production date:1840 Travelers and village people caught in a sudden shower are covering their heads and bodies with straw hats and mats, rushing for shelters. On the left, a temporal tea stall is depicted, and people who escaped from the rain have a rest. This series of ukiyo-e is called “The Toukaidou with Kyouka Poems” since a kyouka poem is assorted to every ukiyo-e picture.

Utagawa Hiroshige The production date:1840 Yoshida post station was located at today’s Toyohasi. The bridge that spans over Toyo-gawa River was also called Toyo-hashi Bridge (It was also called as Yoshida O-hashi). Since decorations of fan, parasol and gohei (The wooden wands decorated with shide, the zigzagging paper streamers, used in Shinto rituals.) are attached to the nagamochi, it is considered that they are carrying things related to auspicious occasions. By dividing the space before the travelers riding horses, the slope of the mountain pass, which starts from the elevated area to the lower area is expressed.

Utagawa Hiroshige The production date:1840 Yahagi Bridge that spanned over Yahagi River was the longest bridge among the Toukaidou Highway. On the bridge, a procession of samurai, followed by the porters carrying spears, is depicted.

Utagawa Hiroshige The production date:1840 The production of Arimatsu shibori (tie-and-indigo-dyed) took place at Arimatsu Village located east side of Narumi post station and these products were sold at the shops along the Highway. Travelers are attracted by the various kimonos displayed at the shop-front.

At the right foreground, Hama no Torii, a big Torii Gate of Atsuta-jingu Shrine with the background of extended Ise Bay is illustrated. Traveler had to take the sea route from Miya to Kuwana post station and this was the only sea route existed along the Toukaidou Highway. It is called “the ferry of 7-ri (7-ri is about 27.3 km)”.
