Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Production date:1888 The encounter of Yoshitune and Benkei at Gojo Bridge in Kyoto is one of the famous anecdote of Yoshitsune in his youth, when he still used his childhood name Ushiwakamaru. In this picture, the scene of Ushiwakamaru’s great jump, as he swiftly dodges the longsword attack of Benkei is captured. After this fight, the young Yoshitsune became the master of Benkei.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi Production date:1855 After winning the Battle of Ichi-no-tani, Yoshitsune was appointed to Saemon Shoujou (Hogan), an official with judicial and police powers, by the Retired Emperor Goshirakawa. In this picture, the scene that Yoshitsune gathers his vassals and departs for the battle took place in west is illustrated. 

Natori Syunsen Production date:1912-1926 Yoshitsune fought the battle against Heiji Clan by responding his brother Yoritomo’s command and achieved the great military exploit. He was on his triumphal return to Kamakura as transferring the war criminals Taira no Munemori and his son, but he was refused to enter Kamakura. At Mampukuji Temple in Koshigoe (Kamakura City), Yoshitsune wrote a letter known as “Koshigoe-jou (Koshigoe Letter)” and professing his loyalty to Yoritomo and his feeling. It is said, this treatment of Yoshitsune was influenced by Kajiwara Kagetoki, who took every opportunity to slander Yoshitsune.

Utagawa Kunisada(Utagawa Toyokuni Ⅲ) Production date:1815-41 After he was refused to enter Kamakura, he returned to Kyoto and appointed as Iyo-no-kami (the director of provincial officials). In this picture, as the legendary hero, Yoshitsune who wears gorgeous costume, armor and helmet is illustrated.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi Production date:1830-1848 Once, followed by his brother Yoritomo, Yoshitsune left the capital of Kyoto and headed north to Fujiwara Hidehira's domain in Oushu. On the way to Oushu, Yoshitsune and the loyal followers are disguised as the mountain priests yamabushi and the story that they are questioned their identities at the Ataka Barrier (Komatsu City in Ishikawa Prefecture) became the famous kabuki play “Kanjinchou (the Subscription List of Contributors)”.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi Production date:1845 This warrior picture series illustrated the anecdotes of Japanese worriers. Yoshitsune and Benkei were illustrated in the facing page. The brief biography and distinguished military exploits are described in the captions inserted above the figures. Sign board illustrated in the middle, with the notice "Anyone cutting a branch from this tree must have a finger cut off” was erected by Benkei. This is “The Ban about the Wakagi no Sakura” erected in front of the “wakagi no sakura (the young cherry tree)” that was said to be planted by Hikaru no Genji, the main character of “The Tale of Genji”. This story became famous after the joruri play “Ichi-no-tani Futaba Gunki” included this episode.

Kitagawa　Utamaro Production date:1798-1800 This work is from the series of twelve works that illustrated women engaged in “sericulture industry”. Sericulture is the production of silk and people produced silk thread by reeling the filaments unbound from the cocoons. Since the main print color is purple, this type of work was called as “murasaki-e (the purple color picture)”. In this picture, the process to select and to classify the skein of silk, which was reeled from cocoons, based on its whiteness and quality is illustrated.

Kitagawa autamaro Production date:1798-1800 For the last work of the series of 12 works, the scene of weaving a roll of textile is illustrated. A lady who sits at the weaver with the loose long hair uses both her hands and legs to weave the silk and holds a shuttle in her right hand.
