Utamaro Kitagawa Production date:1803 In the picture, the shopfront an Edo period ezoushi-ya (illustrated book shop) is illustrated. Many nishiki-e (colored brocade prints) are displayed in a small shop and tells us how ukiyo-e pictures were sold during the Edo period. In the shop, the commodities such as the ukiyo-e prints of kabuki actors, beautiful women, sumo wrestlers and the elongated pictures called “hashira-e (pillar picture)” are displayed.

Utagawa Kunisada(Utagawa ToyokuniⅢ) 1852 Mashiba Hisayoshi refers to Hashiba Hideyoshi, a famous feudal lord of the Sengoku period who　has also been portrayed in a kabuki play. In this play, when Ishikawa Goemon decides to instigate a rebellion at Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto, a stage prop rises up and Mashiba Hisayoshi appears in disguise, dressed as a pilgrim. This work depicts Mashiba Hisayoshi in the costume he wore in that scene.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 The scene of Nihonbashi Bridge crowed with variety of people, such as merchants　fish seller and urban woman are illustrated. The storehouses are illustrated across the bridge, the Edo Castle is illustrated on the right, and the Mt. Fuji covered with snow is illustrated on the background.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 The ocean view from Shinagawa with the women wearing kimonos in the foreground are illustrated. Shinagawa was the key place for the distribution of the products, and as if to emphasize the fact, a large wooden cart that carried the products is illustrated with the puppies beside it.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 Rokugou River was the name of the downstream river of Tama River and it was often illustrated in ukiyo-e as the first river to cross after leaving Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Toukaidou.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 The view of Sakaigi, after climbing up the Gonta-zaka Slope is illustrated in this picture. The teahouse was famous for botamochi, a rice ball coated with sweetened red beans.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 Women travelers proceeding along the Toukaidou Highway are illustrated with the background of the slightly elevated Mt. Koma-yama.
