Yaji and Kita walk under heavy rain and wind, while thunder rumbles in the dark sky. Yaji is wearing a straw raincoat, but Kita has no rain gear, and complains that he will get wet even if they hurry. The two hurry to the nearby teahouse with dynamic movements.

A tomeonna (woman who solicit travelers) is pulling Kita’s belt and soliciting him to stay at her inn, saying that night will fall by the time they reach the next post station. Tomeonna were present at every post station.

On a new temple pillar, a monk finds scribbles that say “Kanda Hatchōbori Yajirobē Kitahachi Two Companions.” Yaji and Kita claim that the temple’s monks are to blame, but they clam it’s Yaji and Kita, leading to disputes. In the middle, Kita calls them flatterers, worsening the situation. Yaji and Kita end up running away from the temple covered in sesame ashes.

Yaji tried to sneak into a young woman’s bed, but the bed he sneaked in was that of an old woman. Kita came running with a lantern, worried about what happened. The old woman who screams with surprise, and Yaji who panics—a typical scene of Yaji and Kita.

Yaji and Kita approach a mother and daughter traveling on the same way. Kita praises that they are beautiful like Tanosuke, who seems to refer to Sawamura Tanosuke III, popular onnagata kabuki actor at the time.

A woman warns Yaji and Kita who are following her, but as they don’t seem to stop, she throws a net at them. Kita is caught. He asks Yaji for help, saying that he is mistaken for a merman.
