Utagawa Kunisada(Utagawa Toyokuni Ⅲ) 1833 Rokugou River was the name of the downstream river of Tama River and it was often illustrated in ukiyo-e as the first river to cross after leaving Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Toukaidou.

In this picture, almost the same picture of Futakawa River illustrated by Hiroshige from the series of the Toukaidou Highway is used. On the left, the sign of kashiwa-mochi (the rice cake wrapped with oak leave) is illustrated. The figure in front is Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Ishikawa Tomoichi, who is the same figure of the great thief Ishikawa Goemon. One of the printing techniques to create luster on the surface shoumen-zuri technique is used at the costume of Ishikawa Tomoichi. This technique creates the effect to appear the pattern in the monotone black costume if a viewer looks it from the certain angles.

This print depicts Gaku no Kosan, a character from the genre of kabuki plays known as Kosan Kingorō-mono. This genre of plays is based on true events that took place during the Genroku period (1688-1704), in which Kosan, a bath maiden from Osaka and kabuki actor Kanaya Kingorō committed double suicide. The first play of Kosan Kingorō-mono was a Bunraku (puppet play) shown in 1702 at Osaka. 　　　　　　Although Kosan Kingorō-mon plays were also produced in Edo starting from 1811, most only borrowed the names for the characters and the stories were far off from true events. At the time of publication, the actor portraying Kosan in this print, Iwai Hanshirō VI had passed away.

The elderly mother of Yamamoto Kansuke (No.18) from the kabuki play Honchō Nijushikō portrayed by Ichikawa Danzō VI is depicted in the foreground. As indicated by the title “Goyu II”, this print was created as a pair of No.18 Goyu from group 1. In act three of the play, the Nagao clan, a powerful samurai clan, visits Yokozo, the eldest son of the elderly mother, to promote him as a retainer. The Nagao clan intend to kill Yokozo in place of their heir Kagekatsu. The elderly mother demands Yokozo become a Nagao retainer, but Yokozo refuses and reveals that he had secretly been the retainer of the Takeda clan, a rival samurai clan of the Nagao clan. At the end of act three Yokozo inherits the name of his deceased military strategist father and becomes Yamamoto Kansuke.

Kofuyu is a character who appears in the play about the infamous bandit Ishikawa Goemon, Konoshita Kage Hazama Gassen. In the act of “Mibu-mura (Mibu Village)”, Kofuyu is almost sold off to become a courtesan due to the financial difficulty the family is facing. However, her adoptive brother Ishikawa Goemon saves her before her fate is sealed. During this encounter Kofuyu’s father Jiemon discovers that Goemon had become a bandit and upon this realization, attempts to commit suicide. In the struggle to stop her father, Kofuyu is accidently killed. The actor portraying Kofuyu in this print is Ichikawa Monnosuke III, who was a popular young actor specializing in female roles. He had already passed away before the publication of this print.

Taira no Tadanori, like the figures of Mariko post station (No.15) and Okabe post station (No.16), is a character from the play Ichinotani Futaba Gunnki. He is based on the real-life samurai by the same name who appears in Heike Monogatari (The Tale of Heike), an epic chronicling the war between the Taira clan and Genji clan. Tandanori was a talented man excelling in military and literally arts. So much so that Okabe Rokuyata (No.16) regretted taking the life of such a talented person despite being enemies. The actor portraying Tadanori in this print is Ichikawa Danjurō VIII.

This portrait is thought to be Sawamura Chōjūrō V as Ashikaga Sanshichirō Yoshitaka in his 1849 performance of Date Zensei Sakura no Iromaku. This play is part of the umakiri genre of kabuki plays that derived from the fifth act of Keisei Harunotori titled “Senshū Sakai Yamatobashi-no-ba.” First performed in 1794, the plot focuses on Oda Sanshichi Nobutaka, who ambushes an umakata (a transporter for hire that carried people or goods on horseback) and steals the 3,000 ryō that the umakata had been transporting. The background of this print depicts the entrance to Ishiyakushi post station and uses the landscape from Ishiyakushi from Utagawa Hiroshige’s Tsutatya edition of the “Tōkaidō” series. The frame of the title is decorated with a bridge and three senryōbako (a box of 1,000 ryō). This often appears as iconography to represent the umakiri genre.

Thought to depict Daihachi (Daijinbo), the antagonist of “Mukashi-gatari Uguisuzuka” (The Tale of the Bush Warbler’s Grave; also known in Japanese as simply “Uguisuzuka”). The actor playing the role is Ōtani Tomoemon IV. “Mukashi-gatari Uguisuzuka” is a play based on Ritsujōtei Kiran’s reading book, and tells the story of Sasaki Gennosuke, who becomes the husband of the chief's daughter, Umegae, after he rescues her bush warbler (bird), and then, with the help of the warbler, avenges his parents' enemies. The background is thought to be a reference to the Tsutaya edition of the Tōkaidō series by Utagawa Hiroshige, based on the depiction of the torii gate in the center of the screen and the pine tree in front of the gate.
