At the right foreground, Hama no Torii, a big Torii Gate of Atsuta-jingu Shrine with the background of extended Ise Bay is illustrated. Traveler had to take the sea route from Miya to Kuwana post station and this was the only sea route existed along the Toukaidou Highway. It is called “the ferry of 7-ri (7-ri is about 27.3 km)”.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 In this picture, a scene at the fork of Hinaga located at the west end of Yokkaichi post station is illustrated. Toukaidou Highway forked from Ise Highway at this place. At the center, the Second Torii Gate (Ni no Torii) and night lights are illustrated in the lively mood of the fork town with many travelers passing by.

It was called mitsuke, which are situated at the gate of the post stations with some guards. Mitsuke was originally a military facility. This picture tells us that during the early Edo period, Highways and post stations still have the militaristic characters.
