At the both side of the picture, the mounds on the stone wall foundations with the barriers build on the top are illustrated. It was called mitsuke, which are situated at the gate of the post stations with some guards. Mitsuke was originally a military facility. This picture tells us that during the early Edo period, Highways and post stations still have the militaristic characters.
