Kumano Gongen (present Kasado Shrine) is illustrated beyond the torii gate on the right side of the work. Among travelers, there is a Konpira pilgrim carrying a tengu mask on his back. Mistakenly written as Shirashimazuka in the work, Shiratorizuka (also known as Hiyodorizuka), a legendary place where Yamato Takeru is said to have passed away and flew from as a swan, as well as Onzōshi Shrine (Kaba no Kanja Noriyori no Yashiro) where Minamoto no Yoritomo’s younger brother, Noriyori, is enshrined, are located between Ishiyakushi and Shōno.

This is the only snowscape in the series. Marigahara was a plain in the west of Ishiyakushi and also called Marigano. In Kokubu, the last village before Marigahara, the former site of Ise Kokubunji Temple built upon orders of Emperor Shōmu is located.

A street scenery of a port town, Yokkaichi city is illustrated. A ship mast from the ship docked at the Yokkaichi Port can be seen at the back. The cherry-tree lined pass illustrated at the center of the picture draws the attention of audience. Using the newly introduced bright red pigment, such as the cherry tree color of this picture, is one of the distinctive features of the Meiji period ukiyo-e.

The ferry of 7-ri (7-ri is about 27.3 km) is illustrated from Kuwana post station. The Torii Gate illustrated at the right is the First Torii Gate of Ise-no-kuni. For the travelers of the Toukaidou, who traveled from the east, arriving Kuwana indicates that they are about to enter the gate of Ise-no-kuni. This Torii Gate still replaced every 20 years, on the occasion of the ceremony of Shikinen Sengu, a huge replacing rituals of Ise-jingu Shrine. The building illustrated on the middle is Kuwana Castle.

Miya and Kuwana were connected by a sea route called Shichiri-no-watashi and prospered with travelers on the Tōkaidō and visitors to Ise Shrine and Atsuta Shrine. Atsuta’s port light is illustrated at the center. It was built for ships crossing at night in 1625 and moved from Sugaura to Miyajuku in 1654.

This work illustrates the view of Arimatsu where Arimatsu shibori specialty stores stand side by side along the road. Arimatsu shibori, cotton textile made with various tie-dyeing techniques, was a popular summer yukata fabric.

For the people travelling Tokaido Highway a visit to the Chiryu Shrine was famous for “helping to ward off the dangers of poisonous vipers”. The detailed depiction of people’s behavior in the picture, and well-illustrated scenery, painted with passion, are inherited from the style of Hiroshige I.

Yahagi Bridge was known as the longest bridge along the Toukaidou Highway and it was also a famous place. The illustrated bridge is the temporary bridge constructed after the Meiji period. The two-wheeled rikisha and people dressed in the western cloths are passing by on the bridge. Two women are doing laundry and a man draws water from the river at the foot of the bridge.
