Yaji and Kita are carried on shoulders to cross the Okitsu River. As the Edo shogunate prohibited construction of bridges over rivers for defense purposes, people used to cross rivers with the help of coolies. Yaji is carried by a coolie on the left. He is frowning and seems to be arguing with the coolie. It turns out that the coolie’s back is hitting Yaji’s vital spot, and Yaji is in unbearable pain.

Yaji and a rōnin samurai are exchanging words. Yaji is striking a pose like a kabuki actor. He seems to be asking the rōnin to give him some travel expenses. In the end, the two conclude “What you need is a good companion in journey and compassion in life.” The text in the painting says “▲Yaji ●Rōnin” at the end as signs that rationally divide the two’s lines, suggesting the speed of their dialogue.

Kita looks into a cauldron while telling the ancient Chinese tale of Sima Guang's breaking of the jar. In this story, child Sima Guang plays with his friends around an expensive and large water jar, but one of his friends falls into it. Sima Guang then broke the jar to save his friend, prepared to be scolded by his father, who actually praised him for saving life. Unlike Sima Guang, Kita is scolded for entering a cauldron related to Minamoto no Yoritomo by a man wearing an eboshi headgear.

Yaji and Kita are walking on a steep mountain path in Hakone Hachiri. In the Hakone scene of Ikku’s Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige, Kita says a joke while holding a torch. In the painting, a man dressed like a kabuki actor surprises Yaji and Kita. Hakone was famous as a resort with seven hot springs even during the Edo period. Hakone also had one of checkpoints established to defend Edo. It was known for its particularly strict control.

When Yaji-san and Kita-san cross the Rokugou river by a ferry boat, Yaji releases his fundoshi (loincloth, underwear for man) into the river, instead of a towel.

A fort can be seen at the center of the sea in the background. It was built by the shogunate upon the arrival of Perry in 1853 and still remains today as a park. In the lively atmosphere of the Nihonbashi Bridge, filled with people and street venders, Yaji-san and Kita-san are trying to bargain down the price of beans. From the Edo period, Tempura and Sushi were already popular, but at that time they were sold at stalls with a reasonable price.

Yaji and Kita are jokingly striking poses around an itinerant monk with a bamboo hat they met on the way. Yaji is imitating a kabuki actor and introducing himself, “I’m not Naritaya but Tochimenya (Yaji’s trade name).” Tochimen were noodles made from horse chestnut flour mixed with wheat flour and buckwheat flour and eaten like udon. As it hardens quickly and must be prepared with speed, the cooker chaotically shakes the tochimenbō stick, to which a restless and flustered person was likened. Therefore, Yaji who is constantly making a fuss is named Tochimenya.
