Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1852 The scene of a wharf built under the Nihonbashi Bridge, the beginning point of the Toukaidou, is illustrated. At the opposite bank, many warehouses are lined up. ＜The Toukaidou Highway Section＞ Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”.

Jippensya ikku 1798 The author, Jippensha Ikku, was a representative playwright of the late Edo period and is said to have been the first in Japan to live solely on his writing, thanks to the success of his Tokaido Hizakurige (Shank’s Mare: Tour of the Tokaido Highway) series. As in this work, he also created his own drawings for his early works. This work is a Kibyoushi (a simple reading material mainly consisting of pictures form the Edo period) that tells the comical story set in Enoshima Island. The story follows the marriage between two members of the Seven Deities of Good Luck, Bishamon-ten　and Benzai-ten.

Heitei (Hata) Ginkei 1833 (Tempou 4) This is a travel guide book of the journey along the Toukaidou Highway from the origin of Nihonbashi station through Totsuka, Fujisawa and Enoshima Island. Many famous places with the great views, the local products, cultures and foods along the Highway are introduced. The famous sites, such as the historical architectures and the incidents that took place at the particular sites are also described . The illustrations were done by twenty six artists including a notable artist of the late Edo period Tani Bunchou. There are also various marine products, such as the Enoshima’s local products are illustrated.
