Introduction written by Hashi Rien Production date: 1787 (Ten’mei 7) This is an inaka-ban (works printed and issued locally) version of shiibun (poetry and prose) of the views of landscapes of the Enoshima Island. This anthology of “shibun” of Japanese and Chinese poetries was composed by the poets of Goshomi, the district of today’s northern Fujisawa city. The eight views of Enoshima Island are, “Autumn Moon at Kinki-zan (Mt. Kinki)”, “Hazy Morning Sunlight at Iwaya”, “Night Rain at Shounien Abyss”, “Wild Geese Alighting at Ujima”, “Returning Sails at Higashi-ura”, “Sunset at Nishi-ura”, “Evening Snow at Futatsu-yama”, and “Evening Bell at Koutou-ji (Koutou-ji Temple)”. With the poets from today’s Fujisawa city, districts such as Endou, Uchimodori, Miyahara, and Youda, the poets from Koyato and Koyurugi from today’s Samukawa town, and Yoshioka from today’s Ayase city participated to this anthology. Utou of Youda, a poet participated to this anthology, also contributed a poem to an anthology “Shoukai-Shiji”, the memorial poetries anthology that celebrated the re-construction of Oiso Shigi-tatsu-an, a former poetry school at Oiso. The condition of the print is unstable and the printed pigments were uneven at the several spots. At this time, the printing operation usually took place at the metropolitan areas, such as Edo (today’s Tokyo), Osaka and Kyoto and the works printed at the other area were called, inaka-ban, or the local print. Together with its contents, this particular print is very valuable as a historical artifact, since this was probably printed at Fujisawa region

Utagawa Sadatora 1830-1844 (Tempou era) Publisher: Etatsu (Ezaki-ya Tatsuzou) This work has an iban (Add some changes to the original work and reprint using the same woodblock. ) with the same title and from the same publisher. In the iban version, Sadahide changed the number of the big wave on the background from one to two, and the arrangement of the people. Beside this work, Sadatora also produced “Deities of Seven Lucky Gods, Ebisu and Daikoku Pay Homage to the Shrine of Enoshima Island” using the themes of the Enoshima pilgrimage and Enoshima Island.

Yousyu　Chikanobu The production date:1898 Three women with the landscape of Enoshima Island viewed from Shichiri-ga-hama Beach are illustrated by a representative Meiji period beauty pictures artist Youshu Chikanobu. A woman illustrated at the foreground is wrapping a towel on her head in a special way called ane-san kaburi. This lady is illustrated with the custom of a young woman, but from the gesture of her hand beckoning the two girls coming after her, it is suggested that she is a mother of these girls. The pale blue, such as the pastel colors of background and woman’s kimono is used as a prevailing color. With this soft pastel colors that symbolized the new era, this work becomes a beauty picture of the modern period.

Kikuya Edition Production date: 1840s This is a map of Sagami Province. Yochi zenzu indicates the entire picture map of that region and there were several “Yochizu” or officially published maps including this “Kikuya Edition”. “Sagami” was the name of the province, or present day’s prefecture, established during the Edo period. In the matter of scale, it is followed by gun (counties), then mura (village) that constructed the unit of people’s life. The names of places are indicated in the oval coin shape signs. The name of river, famous scenic places and landmarks are illustrated in detail. The place painted in bluish green is mountainous region and the peak of Enoshima Island’s is also painted with this color.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 The pole illustrated at the right is the Torii gate of Mishima Taisha Shrine. Situated at the gate of Mishima Taisha Shrine, Mishima post station was flourished with many visitors

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 Woman illustrated at the foreground is carrying a container filled with the local product katsuo-bushi (sliced dried bonito) for sun drying. A little child clings to her leg.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 The illustrated picture is the Ferry of Fujikawa River. As a distant view, the white Mt. Fuji appears among the mountains is illustrated. Since there is no bridge to span over Fujikawa river, travelers crossed the rapid river by ferryboat.

Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 This is a scene at an inn. A male lodger is enjoying the view while the maid is carrying Futons. Ishibe Station is the location where the Kabuki story “Katsuragawa-renrino- shigarami” takes place and the people in the picture seemingly represent the characters, Chōemon: the man and Ohan: the girl.
