Yoshiwara: A View of Mt. Fuji Appears from the Left Side
The Toukaidou Highway extends along the coastline of Pacific Ocean, therefore if a traveler moves from Tokyo to the direction of Kyoto, Mt. Fuji usually appears from the right. However, occasionally, at the section where the road is greatly curved, Mt. Fuji appears from the left, and people call this situation “Hidari Fuji”, literally means left Mt. Fuji. There are two places in the Toukaidou Highway that travelers can see Hidari Fuji and one is at Yoshiwara, as expressed in this work and the other is Nango of Chigasaki city. The people walking in the white outfits are the pilgrims.
The artist seal of this series is “Ryushou-ga (Picture by Ryushou)” and Ryushou is the name of Utagawa Hiroshige II. After Hiroshige I died in 1859, his pupil Shigenobu succeeded Hiroshige’s name and became Hiroshige II. Later, he succeeded the Hirosige I’s style in his work but by 1865, he changed artist name as Ryushou. “Fifty-three Stations of Toukaidou” was published in the year he changed his name and the series consisted of 56 works.
