Kitagawa UtamaroⅡ
Production date:1804-1818
The composition of the two women with a male attendant is a typical composition of the scene of pilgrimage to Enoshima Island. However, the character of a child selling the turban shells illustrated on the leftis very rare. On the right side, a cherry blossoms behind a pine tree is in full bloom, suggesting the season is spring, around April.
The artist Kitagawa Utamaro II was a pupil of Utamaro I and inherited the name after his teacher’s death. He was known with his works of beautiful women that closely followed Utamaro I’s style.
