Utagawa Hiroshige

During the Edo period, many douchu sugoroku (the sugoroku board game that follows the travel route of a journey) were produced. One of the most popular sugoroku was the journey along the Toukaidou Highway. In this work, the route of journey from Edo to Kyoto via Ise Shrine is illustrated. The right side at the bottom is the Nihonbashi Bridge, the starting point of this game, and right side at the upper part is the Kyoto, the goal of the game. The Toukaidou Highway is illustrated as if it surrounds Mt. Fuji. Although this picture was not based on the actual geography, it succeeded to create a dynamic composition.
